Biography

A Brief History of Matthew

Prior to his vocal training at Boston University under Mark Aliapoulios and Penelope Bitzas, Matthew studied with Candace de Lattre in Michigan, and has recently studied with Joan Patenaude-Yarnell and Julia Faulkner.  As an oboist he studied with Dean Sayles, Jeanne Aaronson,  and Dan Stolper, and played with the River Cities Philharmonic, the Northshore Concert Band under John P. Paynter, the Flint Youth Symphony  under Davin Pierson Torre, and the Boston Civic Symphony under Max Hobart.


Matt made his Broadway debut in 2014, first covering and then performing the role of Mary Sunshine in Chicago. While performing that same role in January of 2015, he was in rehearsals for another Broadway show, The Visit, also by Kander & Ebb, which opened on April 23, 2015.  Acting credits include his work with Tony Award-winning directors John Doyle and Frank Galati, the renowned playwright Terrence McNally, and choreographers Ann Reinking and Graziella Danielle. Regional theaters where he has performed include the Cincinnati Playhouse, Huntington Theater Company, Trinity Repertory Company, Williamstown Theater Festival, and Signature Theater Company Television appearances have included Rescue Me, Stella, As the World Turns, and CSI NY.


In the 2015-16 season, Matthew Deming joined Lyric Opera of Chicago for the world premiere of Bel Canto by Jimmy López (composer) and Nilo Cruz (librettist). He has performed as soloist with leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, American Symphony Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and Los Angeles Philharmonic, Kansas City Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, San Diego Symphony Orchestra, Virginia Symphony Orchestra, in addition to such esteemed organizations as Musica Sacra, The Collegiate Chorale, Bard Music Festival, Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, Berkshire Choral Festival, Mostly Mozart Festival, St. Ignatius Loyola (NYC), and the NY Virtuoso Singers.


Operatic credits include Mother of Us All at Hudson Hall in Hudson, NY,  Giulio Cesare at Opera Roanoke (VA), Oresteia and Der Ferne Klang at Bard Summerscape, Love for Three Oranges at the Opera Festival in Lucca (Italy), and La Bohème at the Boston University Opera Institute.


Matt is currently teaching at both Marymount Manhattan College and Bard College as a vocal instructor of contemporary singing and works regularly with most of the professional choruses in NYC.
